Lost in translation made by 2003, describes film star Bob Harris (Bill Murray) go to Tokyo to shoot an advertisement and another girl Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) follow her husband to do assignment in Tokyo, these two guys in a new environment and different culture, how they lost themselves and fill lonely.
At the beginning, when show the film’s name Lost in translation, the screen become black, and background voice use Japanese notice that you’re in Japan, then the close shoot to show Bob’s face is very tried and he’s in sleep, in this time background music is little bit exciting, I can fill Bob just arrive a new place, he is tired and he hope maybe some good thing will happened. If you pay attention on the shoot in this film, you’ll find that direct use a lot of close and mid shoot, I think she want to show actor’s expression to reflect their mind. After that, Bob wake up and looking around Tokyo’s night, it’s a modern city, he is curious. When he come to hotel, the people who waiting for he, their pronunciation and Japanese’s welcome style put Bob confuse. Sofia use mid shoot in this part, you can see every actor’s action, so you can follow Bob’s mind. When Bob stay in his room and play a classic music, he fills lonely, then he goes to pub to drink and there’s a singer singing a English song, it’s a mid shoot in this part, Bob see the Japanese’s pub culture, when Bob back to his room and sleep, he is insomnia, and the fax received massage, remind everyone include Bob, here is Japan, there’s morning in USA. I really like Sofia because she is very careful about the detail, like the fax, first remind audience that Bob has he own family, second remind people Bob is down. The same time, Charlotte is insomnia as well, the close mid shoot shows her face is confused and I think her is thinking in that time: why I’m here?
In the morning, when Bob shower, there’s funny thing happened and Charlotte also wake up, her husband go to work. You will find that this is the one of only two shoots in this film has bright environment. Look at the color, vast of major shoots in this movie, Sofia use the dark color, she want people fill lonely and sad, she wants use color show the status, like begin and end she use two shoots in bright color, I think in begin is means Charlotte and Bob still feel flesh, and they don’t know the future. The end shoot because they’re clear. Let’s back to the story, in the elevator, Sofia use the MS show Bob met Charlotte in the first time, but they haven’t got communication, just see each other and smile, like two normal people from same country meet in Tokyo. When Bob goes to work, the camera move around the work place, and then shift between with Bob and direct use MS and CS, we can fill how Bob confuse and the direct so exciting. I think this shoot and the shoot show Bob work in another advertisement all reflect Bob don’t like the country and fill uncomfortable. Otherwise, Charlotte go to visit Japanese’s temple, on the way, she also fill how different culture between Japan and USA. In the night shoot, the singer still sing some very sad song, and LS shift between Bob, Charlotte and singer, direct contact Bob, Charlotte and their filling together, in that time everyone can fill these two persons they understand each other, in the elevator, CS show Bob smile, it’s exactly reflect Bob happy. Next day, MS follow Bob keep doing his job, MS follow Charlotte and her husband’s back to move, we know something must be happened, they meet the action movie star, the camera shift to Charlotte, and John (Charlotte’s husband) talk with the movie star. Charlotte still fill confuse, because she is not work in this and she don’t know what are they talking about. Next shoot is LS follow Charlotte go to meeting room then camera change to her face, her expression is sneer, then camera shift to the movie star, and also play her interview’s content, it’s sounds stupid, The MS follow Charlotte goes to flower art room, camera CS teacher and Charlotte, Charlotte want to study, and camera shift change between other students, but she just don’t know how to do it. Then LS back to her room, Charlotte sitting in the bathtub and watch the view out of the window, sky still grey, she still lonely. MS shift change between Charlotte and Bob in their bed, and they can’t sleep either, you will know they are going to meet again immediately. Next shoot, MS face Bob and Charlotte, they are talking, share their feeling, I feel it’s very natural because the story before this shoot already told us this status will happened.
Next day, LS shift between Bob and Japanese fit women and swimming coach, they play the ridiculous music, MS follow Bob swimming, until he sow these women’s body under the water, let this shoot very funny, you can fill Bob’s filling little bit change, the same time Charlotte goes to game shop, MCS shift between Charlotte and player, there’s a smile on Charlotte’s face, this talk help Bob and Charlotte fill better. In the night, CS between Charlotte, John, Movie star and her friend, chat with each other on the table, then LS shift to Bob, Charlotte leave the table, camera change to Bob, and they are talking, we hope something happen, but nothing happen.
New day, MS rotate around Charlotte’s room, her husband need to leave and her want to share her filling, but she wasn’t do to in the end, camera shift their face, her husband is very exciting but she is on peace, after that, camera rotate around with Charlotte, she sitting on window’s frame, and looking Tokyo’s view, sky still grey, like her filling, become sad. Next shoot CS shift between Charlotte and Bob, they just like two normal friends to talk, after Bob go back to his room, CS face to he and ECS shoot the letter on his hand, and he check the carpet and say: which one is burgundy. Bob and Charlotte all think their wife/husband don’t understand them.
In their date, all the MS show the talking in pub, then camera follow Charlotte and Bob escape, we can see they’re expression, they’re enjoy it. In KTV, direct use happiness song to show their filling, and camera shift change Charlotte and Bob pay attention to each other. In the corridor, MS show their setting with each other and talk, then change to face them, their relationship more deep than before.
Next day Bob have a holiday, the bright environment and sunshine reflect his mind. In the hospital, Bob try to find some funny, MS shot Bob and the old man, two women behind them, when Bob try to communicate with this old man, that two women laugh, and Charlotte in the room keep going confuse the Japanese.
In the night in that dance place and pub, all the things change, Bob’s joke and singer. In Bob’s room MCS show them talk, and camera shift change the face, you can see the different expression, to show how their mind’s change.
A new day, Charlotte by the train, ELS show the view, color is grey, she goes to a new temple, ELS to show no one in the temple, except her. MS show Bob goes to the show, He looks confuse again. In the night in the taxi, CS show Bob look at Charlotte’s photo, and MS show he is in the bathtub and look at TV, also camera show his face, everything looks back. Next day morning, MS show the double bed and shift to table, there’s double size breakfast meaning there’re two people in the room, MS show Charlotte talk with Bob, and the same time, the singer is singing in the bathroom, camera shift to Charlotte, her expression little bit change. After that, Bob walk on the street, MS show his face and his voice is weary. In the night, because the earthquake alarm, they go to outside, first LS show Charlotte find Bob, and then MS shift their face that they talk with each other, back to the pub, CS show Charlotte and Bob talk, background song is romantic, in the elevator MS show their expression include expect and tension, they want to say something but they are not saying in the end, Bob come close to camera, CS show Bob is disappointment.
Next day morning in the hotel, camera face on Bob to move, and stop focus on telephone, then MS show Bob leave the message to Charlotte. Outside, CS shift each other, and then Charlotte back to elevator, camera back to face on Bob, he’s expression is so sad.
The last shoot, when Bob get out of the taxi, LS face on Bob and shift back the Charlotte, when Bob catch Charlotte, CS shift to them, then they leave, background music is a song show them mind, Bob back to taxi, color still grey, them ELS show the view, movie over.
