Analysis Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola)

In Japan Sofia Coppola who is a young woman director, with eight Americans used less than a month, completed her second movie, about her story. How did she finish this "mission impossible" in a strange land? How did she choose this story? How she listen to the family's opinion?

This is not a heated emotions produce movies. In the movie, based on the alert, I see it in the psychology of ordinary loss is some movies appreciation mentality. But it's still let I smiled in some places, but also some place makes me feel touches something, it is some of them let me feel a bit of regret.

The story is about two of Americans who are in Japan and with communication and collision. We always think something will happen that between over 40 years of marriage man who is lose interesting with his life and just early 20s marriage young lady who is feel confused with her life. However, they did not like we saw in the movie or is expected what we supported that happened. But when people saw this movie, they always support something happen even though that will not appear.

When the movie stars Bob Harris (Bill Murray) went to Tokyo to shoot commercial and lived in the hotel. He standout average height like a joke with a group of Japanese people in the elevator. When he was watching TV in the hotel room, suddenly he saw early movie which is one of his movie and speak Japanese, reminiscent us some bad dubbing when we saw the old American movie. When he was shooting commercial, because of the Japanese cultural that is hard communication also different language that let people feel helpless and laugh. At the beginning, he hates the unfamiliar city, and disturbed him, but he is a polite, professional ethics, so he still want to finish this work and go back his city as soon as possible. The feeling is not sure, not safe when he was in Tokyo.

Charlotte (Scarlett, Jonson) is renowned photographer's wife, because there is no work and boring she followed her husband to Tokyo. Her husband was working with extremely enthusiasm. She tried to feel in Tokyo and Japanese culture. She felt sightseeing, but was unable to communicate with her feel this kind of culture also is too far away from her, she felt puzzled and boring, nobody cares about her feelings, nobody listened to her. There are nothing interesting when she was in the hotel and was watching out of the window on streets. She felt suspicious to her marriage and self worth.

Every day we meet different people, but 99.9 percent we pass. But there always lets people feel there will something happen when they meet someone. We always expect to meet someone who can bring unexpected and surprise. So we can meet is a conditioned coincidence.

When two people meet with the mutual understanding they do not need language, because they have similar loneliness, empty and disappointed in their eyes. There is no way to stop Harris to talk to Charlotte. Because they know each other and eliminate age limits. Two people who could not find the communication vocabulary in the splendid flourishing in the strange. They eat together, Karaoke, together with silence and lost... At last, when Harris is leaving he got off the car and found Charlotte in the crowd, they hug and whispers. I guess that is about Harris told Charlotte take care of herself, but with this sentimentality hug and kiss, this story of two individuals can perfect end, they can convince their marriage, face the life again, when they feel lonely again, probable they will have a smile on their lips because of this kiss!



The film brought me the biggest shock is from narrative style. Seemingly insipid, but actually implication is infinite. The development of emotional between two main roles is impeccable. Also emotional conflicts with everywhere do properly. The scene always changed at the right moment, and gives audiences space to consider. This kind of narrative style can cooperate the emotional restraint between two leading roles and make the content of the narrative style with perfect narrative. Due to limited in time-space scenario, successfully performance of feelings, which requires change performers must accurately, to do every detail, but Bob Harris and Charlotte shows fully comply with it.

Besides emotion, the film has two very good lines of marriage and family. Bob Harris facing a mid-life crisis, the sign is for the family's worry and fear of family responsibility. Charlotte wandering in marriage and ideal of edge, early marriage, frustrated that her husband was working, fear of bothered her everywhere. Within a month of time although that could not prove anything, but also can see the haste. Then I saw when finished singing songs, Harris went back to the hotel to Charlotte gently on the bed. We all know, except stories, storytelling method, performers, also should add details to create a good the movie. After watching the film, I do not know whether to release time and cut some content, I always felt that the lack of a smooth feeling, the heroine of several times between dates appears a little curt appearance.

For foil inner alone of characters, the director use a large number of applying the bustling night in Tokyo, and flow of street is pretty good, but use them to much, so sometimes I feel boring.

In the film, the director also attempts to explore for marriage. Charlotte go to Japanese temple twice, first time she felt this temple and the atmosphere cannot understand. Another, she saw a traditional Japanese weddings, when the bridegroom handled his bride, Charlotte was smiling. But the smile is weak, then, the meeting after the end of the story, what kind of mentality the young Charlotte will use and how to face her marriage? What is the point of her marriage? Actually this is very worthy to discussion. The director may be just want to put the question to the audience to think,

From the start “The Virgin Suicides”, Sophia Coppola’s talent is made me go. Her little cost, to grasp the theme of the film is small and ease, she always with the female that peculiar sharp insight into the world of cinema, she is like a dose of drug for modern movie, directly touch to the most sensitive parts of your heart.

With a kind of awestruck of mood, I watched the second film, the result is a surprise. I think, she is so young for direct, however she does not need to use his dad's famous lakes. In fact, she has been shown to be unique individual style in some ways of treatment moves. It is unique in the cinema. Although little cost, subject matter, also is not small, but as her second movie, it is long enough to make a person gratified.
